My ideas

Ok so I decided that even when I get my yarn that these are the sketches I would pick anyway. And they are pretty simple, I just had to redraw them a little neater than they were. I've got soo many ideas but I decided to just focus on two, and I'm leaning towards the top one. I've had it in mind for a while and it's very soft and feminine to me. I am not sure how well my writing can be read so this is what my little notes say. On the top one the black bars would be 2 or 3 rows of purls or garter to separate the sections. The top section would be gathered. As in I would increase a whole bunch and then decrease at the end to make it ruffled or ruched. There is ribbing on the sides to make it fitting and then a ruffle at the bottom just because I can. ;)
The back would be left ungathered b/c I think it would look silly and will be just plain old stockinette.

The second one is strapless, with plain stockinette at the top, with eyelets to thread ribbon, or an icord, etc, through. Then a simple zigzag eyelet lace for the lower half and a curved bottom edge. Oh and ribbing right under the bust to bring it in and fit to form. I think the bottom would be split on the sides for ease and to make the top lay better. Not sure about it completely. I usually don't make up my mind till I get to it.

Anyway, let me know what you all think and if there are any suggestions, I welcome them!

Welcome to Team Premiere! I too lean toward the top one; I like your idea of the ruching at the front of the bust, and the ribbing along the sides. How are you planning to do the shoulder straps?

They are both very cute. I can't wear strapless designs, so I lean towards the top for that. I would definitely swatch the gathers since the thickness of knitted fabric doesn't always produce quite the same effect as a similar technique as the fine fabrics usually used. The other thing to keep in mind is that the purl ridge below the bust might stick out. That may be the effect you want, but for me, I prefer something that will lie pretty flat for those sort of details. Regardless, they are both very very cute and I think will work quite well in premier.

The straps I'm thinking will just be icord, perhaps binding off all other stitches except for three in four spots, knitting the icord at the front, and grafting to the back.

I plan on using a larger needle, so hopefully that will counteract the thickness of the yarn.

As for the purl ridge, do you think plain stockinette might be more effective as a design element?

Hattie,
Personally, I would be inclined to make a knitted casing and run elastic through the bust detail. I would increase in every stitch at the start of the band, then move every other stitch to a separate needle. I would work the band straight for as long as I want it on the outer band, then knit it the same on the inner band, leaving an opening to run the elastic through. Then I'd knit one stitch from each needle togehter to reduce back to the original stitch count and close the band. If you are working in separate pieces, the opening can be left at the side seams, just remember to sew the inside and outside separately to keep it open. Alternately, I might do a ribbon like you have indicated for the top of the bottom sketch.
However, that's just my preference. Since it's drapy yarn, you may find that my concern is really unfounded and your idea will work great. It never hurts to swatch :)

Yeah, I'm still waiting on the yarn but I really like your idea too. I might be more inclined to use the ribbon instead for more of a decorative look. I think I actually had one drawn that way but thought it would be too much. I could just do stockinette, with eyelets for ribbon like on the second sketch. Thanks for the suggestions, they are really helping to broaden my ideas a bit and finalize the details.

I second Marnie on the knitted casing. I'm using something similar on Mishka (my Premiere design) for a different effect, but I think it would serve your purposes here well, too.

I have to put in a plug for your second design, too, though. It's really current in feel and I'd love to see you do both!

I like the first one best. The gathered bust and the side ribbing is a great combo. Both ideas are really cute though. :)

I am so glad you decided to share your ideas because that is the seed of every project. I have changed my mind so many times I have lost count and when I made my final decision I thought--YES that is want I was looking for!

I managed to get some rowan calmer pretty cheap and so maybe I will try to do both. I also have a different color in the premiere b/c the person I ordered from didn't have as many in the white as they said...so I'm getting a blue color instead. That's what you get when you order on ebay...
Anyway thanks for all support guys, it's nice to hear that someone else besides you likes your designs.
